Small Bedroom Storage Solutions Using Konmari Folding Method

Small Bedroom Storage Solutions Using Konmari Folding Method

Downsizing our house, in case you haven’t heard yet, the toughest part was leaving old closet space behind. I didn’t know how I would make it work. On top of that, I lost my office space. While I have been perfectly content using my laptop throughout the house versus my old desk top; all the binders, pens, printers and paper weren’t as convenient to stash away. I have come up with a few different ways to hide binders and planners, but our printer was just sitting on a small stool in our room. Not exactly the comfy master suite look I was going for. Naturally, I decided to go a little crazy.

“We all go a little mad sometimes.” -Norman Bates

I had recently been reading about the Konmari method. To be honest, I can’t say I read the entire book. She stresses very clearly to finish the entire book before beginning the cleaning process. So, I opened her book, read chapter 1 and immediately went into a panic attack driven cleaning mode. I did all this yet still found myself struggling with the bedroom/office icky-ness. Flash forward to now, after being introduced to the Konmari folding method, the rest is small bedroom/office history. Read on for my small bedroom storage solutions using the Konmari folding method.

The Before

Before we can get to the solution, let’s take a look at the really, really terrible problem. Let me stress the fact that this is an already downsized closet. Not only is our closet 1/3 the size of our previous closet, but I have tossed clothes left and right since we moved in. If you missed the whole story, check it out here: How Downsizing Changed Our Family. I even attempted the 333 Challenge a few months ago. Nothing seemed to make much of a difference. As you can plainly see.

Before

As far as the office part goes, I have started downsizing when it comes to paperwork. I mean big time. Check out my post all about going paperless: Organize Your Life and Office by Going Paperless. Not only is going paperless a huge help in the downsizing, tidying up department but it’s also a very environmentally friendly habit to get into. I have another 35 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Without Totally Changing Your Life. Even with all these new steps, my best office storage was my dresser drawer. Talk about pure chaos.

The office drawer

You can see homeschool paperwork, printer paper, my Blogging Binder, pens, CDs, angel cards. You name it. Stashing everything in this drawer definitely kept my room looking nice and clean, but every time I opened this drawer, I immediately wanted to shut it. There was no organization whatsoever and it sucked.

My sock and underwear drawers were not much better. I’ll spare you the photos of my “keepsakes” but I think this photo of my sock drawer will give you a gist of the kind of state it was in.

After the Konmari Folding Method

I started by taking everything out of my “office” drawer and un-hanging all of my hoodies and sweatshirts from my closet. By using the Konmari folding method, I was able to get all of my sweatshirts and my flannels into my old office drawer which freed up a ton of space in my closet. There are multiple ways that I’ve seen to correctly fold the Konmari way. I however just used all my retail experience to fold and fold and fold everything until they fit perfectly and visibly into my drawer. Amanda with True Good and Beautiful had probably one of the best and easiest tutorials I’ve seen so you can get an idea of how to get yourself started folding.

I couldn’t believe just how easy it was to fit my bulky, oversized sweatshirts into one drawer! Plus they were all still extremely easily accessible and a breeze to find in a hurry. Check it out…

In fact, I was loving this insane space saver so much, I decided to give the same Konmari folding method a try on my bottom drawer. My bottom drawer that originally stashed all my sleep sets, workout pants and sweatpants was totally transformed. I didn’t remove anything and yet, I found myself with tons of excess space. I grabbed one of my extra storage bins and used that in between my workout pants and sweatpants to store my delicate sleep sets. Look how great it turned out!small room downsize, small bedroom, declutter, small office, room office, bedroom office, downsize, konmari method, konmari folding

I took a few extra bins I had around the house to help tidy up my underwear and sock drawers as well. Like before, I will spare you the underwear details, but check out what my top drawer looks like now.

After clearing out a ton of extra space in my closet, I put all my summer dresses and tank tops to the back, where they won’t be needed. Now I had freed up so much closet space, I was able to flip the shelving I had previously used for my shoes in order to have extra, out of the way storage for all my office supplies.

All those things that used to be shoved in a drawer or stuck in the corner are now nicely tucked away in our closet and organized for easy access. I can’t believe how much of a difference the Konmari folding method made as far as freeing up space for me to utilize. Check out these before and afters!

I love using the KonMari Method! I use it on my toddler’s clothes too and we have so much space in her drawers I don’t know what to do with it! I’m slowly converting all my husband’s drawers to this…his sock drawer is so bad and so small. Definitely needed this inspiration to get on top of that.

It really is awesome! It seems so simple to have gone unknown for so long! Good luck working your way through the house!

Oh my goodness, it’s like you’ve staring into my dressing room and snooping around. This is exactly what I need. Mine is a tip and so needs a clear out.

This!!!! I fold my husbands 23408597 tee shirts like this! Saves so much space and I can cram even more shirts into each drawer, AND the drawers stay more organized because he can see which shirt is which and select the one he wants without digging through and messing everything up!

    • heartsoulwhole@gmail.com | 7th Nov 17

HAHA Exactly!! My drawers hold more AND stay better organized. Plus folding them this way doesn’t take much more time than the way I used to fold them!

My husband and I will be moving soon, so I am excited to purge and go through our items. It seems like we have a lot of “stuff” that hangs around the house, so it will be nice to tidy up.

    • heartsoulwhole@gmail.com | 7th Nov 17

It is so freeing letting go of all the stuff you really don’t require! Good luck with the move and the purge!

Wow! I like be the results. My fiancé and I are about to do a deep clean of our closet so this was just the inspiration I needed. 🙂

    • heartsoulwhole@gmail.com | 8th Nov 17

Right? It was such a helpful and much needed transformation. I hope yours goes well as well!
