What to do with Pineapple Peel

What to do with Your Pineapple Peel

I very much live by the “waste not, want not” philosophy as much s I can. So when it comes to my fruits and vegetables, I make every effort to make each part get used as much as possible. Pineapple is probably one of my favorites to do this with. Naturally, I want to share the knowledge, so here is a quick tutorial on how to use ever part of your pineapple, including the peel, because who doesn’t love pineapple? Especially during those hot, summer months.

If you are tired of throwing away all that good pineapple, let me share with you all the different ways you can make the most of this yummy, tropical fruit.

Picking a Pineapple

When I went to a Pampered Chef party and purchased my awesome pineapple slicer, I also learned a helpful tip: if you can pull a leaf right off the top of the pineapple; then it’s ready to eat!

Cutting the Pineapple

I had a great pineapple cutter that has somehow managed to disappear, (kids.) At the bottom of my post, I will share that cutter because it was super easy and way less messy than the alternative. But, if you find yourself without a pineapple cutter, check out this YouTube tutorial:

Unfortunately, I didn’t watch this tutorial before I cut mine and you can definitely see how much prettier hers wound up looking!

Using the Peel

After you have found a use for the main part of your pineapple, you are left with just the peels. When this was my situation, I decided to bust out my Omega Juicer. My kid and I absolutely love the taste of pineapple juice, I mean, who doesn’t? I cut the peel slices into manageable sizes and ran them through my juicer. Check out the pictures below to see just how much useful juice you can actually get from just the little amount left on the edges of the peel.

The best thing about using a high quality juicer verses a low quality or just buying store bought juice is that you will still get some of the pulp in your juice. That means you still get some of the natural fiber from the fruit. If you read my post: Sugar Detox: What About Fruit? then you know the importance of making sure you get as much out of your fruit as possible.

What to do with the juice

You can see from the picture here that I wound up getting a ton of juice out of just a few peels. Plus, it’s green! Like I said, using the Omega Juicer your juice will come out with as much of the “good stuff” as possible. Don’t worry, the change in color in no way effects the amazing flavor of the juice.

I decided to use my leftover juice to make super yummy, tropical smoothies for the kids and I added a little to my white wine for a bit of a sangria feel. Check out the smoothie recipe I made here.

A little bit of juice was set aside to use as a marinade for tomorrow night’s chicken dinner. More on that later.

Other ideas for the peel

If you’re not a smoothie fan, or don’t have anything else to add, you will love this super simple idea: Pineapple, Cinnamon and Ginger Iced Tea. This great recipe from Food52 is another great way to make sure you’re using all the parts of your pineapple with another refreshing, cool, drink.

What about the other stuff?

After your juice is out or your tea has been made, there will still be leftover pineapple. Our family started a compost pile in our backyard which is usually where we wind up putting any of the leftover scraps that don’t get used. If you don’t have a compost, you can simply spread the pulp across dirt in your veggie or flower gardens to help richen up the soil.

Waste Not.

Making the most of foods, like pineapples, you are getting the absolute most out of your grocery list, and also avoiding filling up your garbage can faster. So save some money and reduce your carbon footprint.

Top of the cake

Don’t forget about the very top of your pineapple that you cut off in the beginning. You can always use this as a cute centerpiece if you happen to be having company over.
